Abu Dhabi Sets Appeal Mechanisms for Student Suspension and Expulsion Decisions under Updated Conduct Regulations
As part of its efforts to enhance discipline and ensure a safe learning environment, the Department of Education and Knowledge (ADEK) in Abu Dhabi has introduced updates to the Student Conduct Regulations. The new framework classifies violations into clear levels with corresponding disciplinary measures, while also granting parents the right to appeal decisions, striking a balance between order and fairness.
Social specialist Rola Awartani explained that the regulations categorize violations into four levels. The first level covers minor infractions such as being late for assembly or forgetting books, which are addressed through warnings or alerts. The second level, including leaving class without permission or engaging in school fights, may result in temporary suspension accompanied by close educational follow-up to correct behavior.
The third level includes more serious offenses such as cheating or deliberate vandalism, which could lead to temporary suspension or even a recommendation for permanent expulsion if repeated. The fourth level—covering possession of drugs or weapons, serious assaults, or disrespect toward national symbols—requires immediate permanent expulsion.
Regarding the right to appeal, Awartani emphasized that the regulations allow parents to contest suspension decisions within one working day and expulsion decisions within ten working days. Appeals are reviewed by an independent committee separate from the disciplinary committee, ensuring transparency and impartiality.
She stressed that these updates aim to merge discipline with educational fairness, protecting both the rights of students and parents while maintaining the stability of the school community.
